Selling on WhatsApp in 2026: what small shops should know
November 1, 2026

For many small shops in India, the first “online store” is not a website. It is a WhatsApp chat. A customer sends a message, you send photos and a price, and the order is fixed in a few minutes. Over the past year, WhatsApp has added tools that make this easier, especially around payments and replies. Here is what has changed and how to use it sensibly.
Payments inside the chat
In September 2025, at its business summit in Mumbai, Meta announced that small businesses using the WhatsApp Business app can share a payment QR code in one tap. The customer can then pay inside WhatsApp using the payment method they prefer. For a shop owner, this removes one awkward step: asking the customer to switch to another app and send a screenshot.
WhatsApp’s own payment service also has more reach now. On 31 December 2024, NPCI removed the limit on how many users WhatsApp Pay could bring onto UPI, so it can now offer UPI to all its users in India. Business Today, citing Business Standard, reported that WhatsApp Pay handled about 167.9 million transactions in July 2026, more than twice the number a year earlier. These figures cover all WhatsApp Pay use, not only shop payments, but they show more people are getting used to paying inside the app.
AI replies when you are busy
In May 2026, WhatsApp launched “Business AI” in India for the WhatsApp Business app. According to IANS, it can answer customer questions at any hour, capture leads and book appointments, and can learn from your business profile, product catalogue and documents. It is reported to handle conversations in Indian languages. You can switch it off or take over a chat yourself at any time. WhatsApp also said support for UPI payments within these chats would come soon.
If you try it, start small. Check its answers for a few days, especially on prices, stock and delivery times. A wrong promise from a bot is still your promise.
Good habits for selling on WhatsApp
- Keep your catalogue up to date. Remove items that are out of stock and fix prices as soon as they change. Customers screenshot what you send.
- Use quick replies for common questions. Delivery areas, return policy and payment options should each have a ready answer.
- Confirm every order in writing. Send one message with item, quantity, price, delivery charge and expected date before you take payment.
- Check that payment has arrived. Look in your bank or UPI app, not only at a screenshot, before you ship.
- Use labels. The Business app lets you tag chats as new order, paid or delivered, so nothing gets lost in a busy week.
Where WhatsApp alone falls short
WhatsApp works well once a customer already has your number. It is harder for new people to find you, and your products are buried inside chats. When you have more than a handful of items, you end up sending the same photos again and again. A long chat history is also a poor record of what sold, what is pending and who owes money.
This is why many sellers pair WhatsApp with a simple online store. The shop holds your full product list with prices and photos, and a link to it can be shared in any chat, status or Instagram bio. Customers browse on their own time, and you still talk to them on WhatsApp to close the sale. Each tool does what it is good at.
A simple plan to start
Set up the WhatsApp Business app with your correct address, hours and catalogue. Try QR payments for a week. Write down the questions customers ask most and turn them into quick replies. Once you have more items or more orders than you can track in chats, add an online store and share its link instead of sending photo after photo.
