How local service businesses get found on Google
November 2, 2026

If you run a local service in India, such as a salon, a coaching centre, a clinic, a repair shop, a caterer or a plumbing business, most new customers now look for you on their phone first. They type something like “AC repair near me” into Google or Google Maps, compare a few names, and call one. This post explains how that search works, what you can control, and why a simple business website still matters next to your Google listing.
How Google picks which local businesses to show
Google’s own help page for Business Profiles says local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your listing matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how far your business is from the person searching, or from the area they named.
- Prominence: how well known your business is. Google says this includes information from across the web, such as links and articles, and your review count and rating.
Google also says plainly that you cannot pay or request to rank higher in local results. You can only make your information better.
Search is getting more conversational
In March 2026 Google launched a feature called Ask Maps in India and the US. It lets people ask Google Maps questions in everyday language and get suggestions back, powered by Google’s Gemini AI. Instead of typing “salon Kothrud”, a customer can ask something closer to how they talk to a friend.
For a small business, the lesson is simple. The tools that answer these questions can only use what they can find about you. A listing with only a name and a phone number gives them very little to work with. Clear details about your services, area, hours and prices give them much more.
Step 1: Set up your Google Business Profile properly
- Use your real business name, the same one on your board. Google’s guidelines say not to add extra keywords or locations to the name.
- Pick the category that best describes your main service.
- Add your phone number, opening hours, and the areas you serve if you visit customers at home.
- Upload real photos of your shop, team and work.
- Ask happy customers for a review, and reply to reviews, including the unhappy ones, politely.
- Add your website link.
Step 2: Give customers a website to land on
Your Google listing is a short card. A website is where a customer goes when they want to know more before they call. It is also a place you fully control. A good local service website does not need to be big. It needs a few things done well:
- What you do: a clear list of services, written the way customers would say them.
- Where you work: your address, or the localities you cover.
- Proof: photos of real work, years in business, and a few customer reviews.
- Prices or a starting price, if you can share them. This saves you calls from people who were never going to book.
- One-tap contact: a call button and a WhatsApp button that work well on a phone.
Keep the details on your website the same as on your Google listing. If your hours or phone number differ in two places, customers get confused, and so do search tools.
Step 3: Keep it fresh
Update your hours before festivals and holidays. Add new photos every few months. If you start a new service, add it to both your listing and your website on the same day. Small, regular updates are easier than a big clean-up once a year.
The short version
Customers find local services through Google and Maps, and those tools are getting better at answering questions in plain language. Give them complete, accurate and matching information in your Google Business Profile and on a simple website, and keep collecting honest reviews.
